Aim: using a graph; to include data (facts of information); experiences; opinions

Writing Objective: to include a graph below your main body paragraph; your main body paragraph using the American writing standard (APA7) is between 100-120 words; Experience or Reason 1 or Reason 2 (select 1 body paragraph, and include a graph.

Commentary: The best way to start finding a graph is to read your body paragraph, find a main point or a support sentence. Paraphrase the sentence into google with the work graph.

Week 1 essay example:

The first reason is there are a lot of festivals each year in Japan. Festivals are very popular with foreigners visiting Japan in Spring, Summer, Autumn, and winter. In the graph below, you can see that all seasons (recorded) show that foreigners visit Japan in every season. I don’t really have a favorite season but I enjoy the summer festival in Morioka City called Sansa. For example, one of my favorite festivals is the Koiwai Winter Festival in Iwate, because they have ice sculptures. In my opinion foreigners enjoy visiting Japan to see snow and to ski or snowboard. That’s why I think its interesting. (100 words)

• I selected one sentence
• think of an idea to find a graph – how many people attend this festival every year; number of winter festivals in Japan every year; number of tourists in Japan thus making festivals popular.
• include your experiences.

For example: Graph obesity children in Japan – the way I select a graph is 1) I can make a summary very easily, and 2) I can also understand some specific information. When I find a graph with point 1) and 2) I decide to use this graph.

Teacher example 2:

From the year 1995 to 2015 an increase in overweight children has increased. [3] To be specific the greatest increase in comparison between 1995 and 2010 is the fact that more overweight children occurred between 2010 and 2015. [3]

Review the objectives;

• who we are writing to (readers / audience)
• Introduction 2 (opinion)
• Draft Essay is about 300-330 words; with every paragraph; consider how you are going to add information using the websites (2); order of your main body paragraphs – top/down or bottom/up methods
• Draft essay to the Final essay is to use an evaluation method – CEFR language level for [ vocabulary / sentence structure / verb use… ]. Friday June 6th: Teacher will read your 300-330words. Then you will complete the essay – and submit on Tuesday.

General Level

Vocabulary Feedback levels

Vocab levels; you can check the overall (general level B1.0); and vocabulary levels. Use the evaluation to give you feedback on your word use (what words you use and how you use them)

• A1 / A2 General English
• B1 / B2 Theme or topic related words – including words you have learned from the websites (source of information)
• C1 (yellow) / C2 (red-orange) native(L1) / natural expressions…

How to use CEFR feedback results;

1. Check the topic / vocabulary in your paragraphs
2. Check that there is a balance of your words used between paragraphs
3. Make a connection between the General Level result and the color coded word results.

Aim: is to write another full research essay; and follow the objectives

Format: 5 paragraphs;

• Introduction 1 and 2 are the same but – intro 2 includes your opinion (one sentence)
• In your introduction, add your opinion sentence (last sentence); then
• In your opinion paragraph write your first opinion again (core sentence / no new information / don’t change your idea)

For example: In my introduction – Japan has a very humid climate that I think is really uncomfortable for working outside. In my opinion paragraph – 1) I think that for working outside Japan is humid in summer.

Based on referencing you still have two methods; 1) Is to paraphrase and re-write the sentence using the key words. 2) citation with “quotation” As I mentioned earlier: As I wrote in the introduction Japan has a very humid climate that I think is really unformattable for working outside.

• Think about the order of your body paragraphs; you want to 1) share your opinion to make the reader understand and accept your point of view; 2) top down or bottom up.

Connect your opinion paragraph to the paragraph above it. connect the last body paragraph to the topic opinion sentence in the opinion paragraph.

Aim: To write a full research essay [450 words]

Objectives: Write for your audience; Use the paragraph format; select the introduction (type 1 or 2); use comparison writing (2 websites) – including opinion paragraph. Total 5 paragraphs – 450 words (420-450).

Topic: Select a Topic from A list. This is the last assignment for these topics. Then we progress to the next topic list.

• Introduction 40/60 words + 70 words
• Body Paragraph 1 – comparison 60 words -80 words + add information (method 1 or 2) 100-120 words
• Body Paragraph 2 – comparison 60 words -80 words + add information (method 1 or 2) 100-120 words
• Opinion paragraph 40/60 words + add information (method 3) 80 words
• Conclusion 40 words/ 50 words

Objective is to add information to your body paragraphs. How do we write a body paragraph to make a comparison? Give examples from the website – to add information;

Method 1 – to make a citation. For example – In website one the author says that “the number of elderly people in japan will increase to 25% of Japans population in 2040”.

Method 2 – you paraphrase (you make your own sentence) the information, for example – In website one the population of Japanese will reach 25% by 2040.

Method 3 – there is no right or wrong, but give your opinion based on the information FOI (facts of information). For example, Due to the increase in elderly population I am worried about how the government will pay for their pension.

• Performance (people eat depending on the sport they play or activates they do)

Writing Format: There are 2 body paragraphs; A conclusion; A introduction

Introduction 1

• sentence 1 will answer (In your title) your question
• sentence 2 is the topic sentence from body paragraph 1 – reword this sentence. You don’t change the meaning and you do not add any extra information
• sentence 3 is the topic sentence from body paragraph 2 – reword this sentence. You don’t change the meaning and you do not add any extra information
• sentence 4 – give your opinion about the topic

Introduction 2

• sentence 1 will answer (In your title) your question
• sentence 2 is more focus on your audience/reader – say why this paragraph is important (body paragraph 1)
• sentence 3 is more focus on your audience/reader – say why this paragraph is important (body paragraph 2)
• sentence 4 – give an opinion (one sentence) and support your opinion with some information you researched from the internet. include the url of the information page at the bottom of your report

Note* It is important that you have information from a page on the internet that is factual information (true information). For example a conference page / research page / committee page

Sentence 4 example: “The main reasons for participating in sport were for physical and mental health benefits; being in a social, supportive community; and being part of a team. Other reported reasons included opportunities for achievement, competition, and travel…”

Teacher sentence example (4): I think that it is important for you to be as active and social as you can to support both physical and mental benefits.
