Aim: watch a short educational video

Theme: Self Awareness

Step 1: Task 1: listen to the video (smartphone or PC)

  • write key words / expressions (10-12) [キーワード。キー語彙。テーマ語彙]

  • write the video main points (4-7). Remember a main point is a sub-topic about the main topic;

Facts of Information

Aim: To write about the topic with internet information (A) and your opinion (B)

Topic: Vacant houses and buildings in Japan [this is your new topic this week]

Procedure: Follow these steps; Open a new Word Document and write three short paragraphs 1) Graph; 2) Website; and 3) Opinion

Writing Format: usually we use a graph for the second, third or later paragraph. Because we use the graph to relate to the information before (paragraph one). There are two ways to relate information. 1) To expand the before information – connects. 2) Is to continue with other / different information to provide new facts.

Graph

  1. Search the internet for a graph about the topic.
  2. Take a screen-shot of the graph.
  3. Write a short paragraph about the graph (40-50 words) in your Word Document
  4. Insert the graph(screenshot) under the paragraph

Website

  1. Search the internet about the topic
  2. Select 1 website; copy the URL
  3. Write a short paragraph about the graph (40-50 words) in your Word Document
  4. Insert the URL under the paragraph

Opinion

  1. Write your opinion about the paragraph (30-35 words)

Introduction

  • Topic sentence: write the theme of your essay (1 sentence)
  • Introduce the main point of the body paragraph – website (1-2 sentences)
  • Introduce the main point of the body paragraph – graph (1-2 sentences)
  • Summarize your opinion (1 sentence)

Conclusion

  • Re-write your Topic sentence (slightly use different words)
  • Summarize the main points – in any order. For example website information / graph information, or graph information / website information
  • Write a sentence: Why do you think this topic / subject i important
  • Last sentence: repeat your opinion.

Writing Video Reviews

Aim: To write a short review about a video

Background Information: Videos have many different types of formats. There are lecture types, presentation types including live viewing and recording, PowerPoint, and so on. Advertainments are another kind of media content, and marketing strategies are very important to selling services and products. This introduces your next writing objective:

Video Activity

Aim: watch this video and write a 100 word explanation (pre-task paragraph). The title of your paragraph is:

“The product I would sell with this video is ______________ because _____________ . “

Week 1 – 2 (Tuesday 14th)

Aim: To use word document; we are going to achieve a speaking format about a topic. This is a writing template to introduce writing styles.

Document Rules:

  • Save your document as the [title_student number]. For example: speaking task_2412345
  • Title: centered; bold text; large; 14pt or 16pt
  • Font type: use a simple text, for example, Arial – because it is easy to read
  • Right justify the next line and write your name in English; enter and then the date under your name; not bold; same size as title font

Writing Format:

  • Space and left justify
  • Write the heading and underline
  • Font size is always 12pt

Teacher example: Reason 1

The first reason is there are a lot of festivals each year in Japan. Festivals are very popular in Spring, Summer, Autumn, and winter. For example, one of my favorite festivals is the Koiwai Winter Festival in Iwate because they have ice sculptures. That’s why I think its interesting. (49 words)

Visual Representations: there are many types of visuals used in academic writing, for example 1) pictures; 2) diagrams; 3) graphs.

Pictures: are very helpful to support the text you write. You should write the text first “Reason1” and then search for a picture to support your content.

  • supporting the main idea of your paragraph – interesting points
  • also, we want to use a picture to further explain our main idea
  • to expand our ideas and increase the overall meaning of the text.

Koiwai Festival Picture; ice sculptures

In this picture you can see ice sculptures which have been made out of snow, from the farm at Koiwai. These sculptures have been hand made and each year they usually have a different theme. I like the tall tower sculpture the most in this picture, and I think it would take a lot of hard work and effort to make this. This is one example of ice sculptures.

Hints: check the internet for details, focus on objects in the picture, include your own impression about the picture details.

Task 2: Write the summary; is the summary about your reason 1 and reason 2.

Report 4 Pre-Task / Research Writing (Module 2)

Aim: To select a topic from the list A – a different topic

Objective: Research: is learning about a topic via several sources of information. For example; articles – from studies / research; from textbooks / web information… and so on

Writing objective: is to research two websites about your topic [pre-task] and compare the information.

  • same or similar information
  • different information
  • interesting ideas and opinions

Pre-Task: copy and paste your website URL’s on a word document; and give your report a Title – not a question, it is a topic title (decide the topic).

Writing Format: Friday 9th

  • Main Information Paragraph – same or similar information (60 words)
  • Main Information Paragraph – different information (60 words)
  • Compare any other ideas or opinions (40-70 words)

Improving the Japanese education system by learning from the Filipino system.

Main information paragraph-same or similar information (60words)

Everyone has the right to go to school, but some people drop out due to various reasons. Both Japan and the Philippines have alternative schools for such students. Unlike traditional schooling, these schools provide flexible learning systems, allowing learners to study at their own pace and in their own time, accommodating circumstances and responsibilities. They believe that career development enriches life.

Main information paragraph-different information (60words)

 Japan has an alternative school system called ‘Free school’ for children who cannot attend regular schools. The majority of reasons are bullying. However, students are required to pay tuition because these schools are private. In contrast, the Philippines offers the “Alternative Learning System “ALS), which provides free education for people who were not able to continue their schooling.

Aim: Select a topic (topic list 1-5); then select your focal (focus) topic

Self-evaluation: Steps to self evaluate your introduction

  • check your topic sentence answers your question
  • check your introduction to main body paragraph 1 is directly introduced.
  • check your introduction to main body paragraph 2 is next directly introduced.
  • check the last sentence of your introduction is meaningful – related to the content

April 14th – write for your reader / audience (Module 1)

Explain a problem in society in Japan. Give your opinion.

Steps: identify who your reader or audience is? What situations might you be preparing a response – written or spoken

Problem: University students have things that affect ability or performance (work load). Some students are effected and burn out, which means they can not do all the work and may quit or suspend learning.

You are writing an article for the University newspaper.

  • think of the scope of your audience;
  • who are they, is everyone the same / different – make a small chart
  • care about audiences own ideas, experiences, opinions… decide who you are writing to???

Writing format;

  • introduce the problem by asking a question to your audience
  • give main point one to explain the problem (one problem)
  • support sentence to main point one: give an example (real-life situation)
  • give main point two to explain the problem (same problem)
  • support sentence to main point two: give an example (real-life situation)
  • give a solution to the above main points

6 writing tasks:

  1. Write a short introduction about yourself (25-35 words)
  2. Describe yourself – if you were in a job interview (25-35 words)
  3. Explain your course work and study, and main motivation (35-40 words)
