15/10 – 22/10

Aim: Follow up Activity: Video

Everyone defines who they are differently, because of their own cultural aspects, for example Religion, different ideals and beliefs about life in general, and also the customs and traditions.

Therefore, we can say that everyone viewing this video will have a different perspective on what they see and don’t see.

When we communicate in writing for example, we have to consider the background of our audience and the viewpoint they have.

Example: What is your definition of fast food?

Activity 1: Try and convince (an argument – is a point of view) me that Japanese fast food is the healthiest food compared to American fast food.

Teacher example: To set up for writing the argument [ paragraph 1] you want to say. It sets the boundaries or limits to say exactly what my view point is.

I define fast food [ giving a definition of your topic ] as food that is prepared quickly and is cheap and also tastes good. Secondly I define healthiest food [ if your topic has a related topic also define it ] as the fast food that is more healthy compared to other fast foods. In addition, I think that there is a difference between fast food and junk food [ important statement to make ] . I will focus [ purpose for writing ] on fast food only and not consider junk food. There are two main points [ what your argument has – 2 main points ] I will discuss to show you that Japanese fast food is way more healthier than American fast food, which are cooking method (1) [ main point 1 = body paragraph 1 ] and good calories (2) [ main point 2 = body paragraph 2 ].

Example about how to write the example body paragraphs; write a list of 3-4 important points. Then write two sentences of each [ facts of information / opinions / reasons (why)/ examples (statistics) ]. Your body paragraphs should only be 100-110 words each.

  1. Cooking method: important points
  • cooking method – temperature
  • type of oil
  • number of times the oil is replaced with new oil

2. Good Calories: important points

  • locally grown ingredients
  • in house made products (products made by the same company)
  • amount and variety of ingredients including herbs and spices

Friday 10/25 – Writing Objectives: It helps to write your argument if you;

  • use common experiences (something people can relate to or understand)
  • select ideas in your writing to support your argument, not against
  • give examples of the benefits (positive (+ve) points) [viewpoint is MOS is healthier] and to support your argument with neg (-ve) points [viewpoint is MAC is less healthier].

Essay 2 – 8/10

Repeat with a new topic for the general topic list. The objectives are the same, however, paragraph 1 is now 2; paragraph 2 becomes 1.

Drafting: to check the format writing and our objectives, including;

  • First sentence is a topic sentence – paragraph focus
  • FOI – Fact Of Information;
  • Support sentence gives an example about the FOI
  • Statistics are required ( you need statistics to support your idea(s);
  • Keep your idea simple and do not try to write to many ideas in 1 paragraph = 1 idea
  • Final sentence should support the topic sentence (first and last sentences are related.

Essay 1 – 4/10

im: To write your first short essay – 200 words; [ time limit ]

Format: A format is a template or design to write and complete a objective.

Objective: This short essay has two writing objectives; a) to explain the situation (topic) in Japan – 100 words; paragraph 1; b) to research the internet and find some statistic(s) information about the problem – 100 words (paragraph2).
