Week 1: Identifying a problem

Aim: Identify information and write short paragraphs: A) research; B) explain and provide details; C) give your experiences; and opinion

Writing Objectives A): Research the topic. Sources of information can be textbooks, articles, websites, journals and magazines and so on.

  • it is important to research the topic and take notes
  • always record the source of information, example website URL
  • you need 2 or 3 sources of information for a short essay

Writing Objectives B): Provide details of the topic. Sources of information should be used to give specific details, in seperate paragraphs.

Writing Format: Select two websites and write two paragraphs for each website; Please write your two paragraphs in a word document.

  1. Title for each paragraph: Website 1 & Website 2
  2. Each paragraph has 65-80 words
  3. Summarise the information for each website

Writing Objectives

  • for each source (website) – identify the main point(s) – paraphrase (take a lot of information and write 2-3 sentences about each point. t
  • write supporting sentences to explain main points – in your own words
  • as well, give examples; you can use quotations also, for example The scientist stated that There are several animals each year hunted by poaches which are officially endangered species[1]
  • at the bottom of the essay record your “References” for example [1] URL; [2] Textbook name and page number

Topic: Health & Weight for Young Children

Basic structure

This website provides clinical information about the increase in children’s weight in the last decade [topic sentence]. One main point includes the fact that children are eating a lot of junk food recently [main point]. For example, children often eat fast food and as well, eat a lot of snacks during and after school [support sentence of the main point]. Another main point mentioned in the website included children are not doing enough exercise [main point]. Children are playing video games instead of going outside and playing more active games [support sentence]. June 1st – June 3rd – June 8th

Aim: To write a rhetoric type essay is to convince someone of something

Procedure: the teacher will walk through the activity stages

  • 1. select a topic from the ICT course

  • 2. Do you have an idea about the topic, for example; I think that HW should not be required in Primary school

  • 3. Write a narrow based essay focusing on one specific point, for example HW Vs Kids playing in the park

  • 4. Your focus is not to talk about the negative points of your topic, for example HW, rather, you should focus on the positive points of kids playing in the park. If you focus on the negatives too much the reader is less likely to believe you.

  • 5. Group your positive points into categories, for example; facts of information; common views and opinions; your experiences; subject’s positive views and outcomes. Write paragraphs based on these categories. You can be less balanced in the number of sentences your write or your word count.

  • 6. Statistical information; after you have grouped your information, search for 2 or 3 light statistical information to help support your ideas. You will use these in the above paragraphs.

  • 7. Introduction; topic sentence; the reason for each paragraph

  • 8. Conclusion: be understading that everyone has the right to believe what they want to believe. But, you would like the reader to consider your points because….

June 24th – 26th – July 1st

Aim: Opinion Essay link

Technology Topics:

Method: To write an opinion essay following the format in the writing guide

Procedure: follow these steps in this specidific order;

  • 1. decide and answer if the above statement is true or not

  • 2. select your response – only one

  • 3. decide what your opinions are to support your response

  • 4. select the order to present each opinion

  • 5. structure your essay with an introduction / conclusion and 2-3 body paragraphs

June 17th – Repeat Essay

Aim: to rewrite a topic that you wrote in week 1 to Week 5

Method: select the topic and write any style of essay. Write a one page essay, and 1) decide the style of essay and 2) the number of paragraphs and 3) word count for each paragraph.

Procedure: complete the essay and submit to your teacher; Monday 26th.

June 10th – June 12th – June 17th

Compiled Essay

Aim: To introduce a specific problem about a topic, present 2 solutions and write the for and against for each solution.

Method: To make a connection with the previous two writing objectives a) problem & solution type essay and b) for and against essay.

Procedure: To be given and conducted in class

June 3rd – 5th – 10th

Message: Please write a For and Against essay!

Aim: To write 5 paragraphs in 3 classes; 3rd, 5th, and 10th. Submit 12th.

Method: Write body paragraphs first and show the teacher in class; Write conclusion and show the teacher in class; Write introduction and show the teacher in class; Final proofread and submit online (the teacher will show you this procedure).

Procedure: Complete the following paragraphs in order and show the teacher;

First:

  • Write the For point of view and explain – factual information only 60 words
  • Write the Against point of view and explain – factual information only 60 words
  • Write a discussion paragraph – select a point of view and say why? 60 words

Second

  • Write conclusion paragraph – restate your point of view and summarise the essay 60 words

Third

  • Write introduction paragraph – introduce the topic, and why it is important to discuss this topic. Do not say your opinion. 60 words

May 27th – 29th

Aim: To write a for and against essay

Method: To read the outline in the writing guide and write a short essay in class;

Procedure: Complete the following paragraphs;

  1. Write a short introduction paragraph – introduce the topic and explain the for and against sides of view. Why is this topic important?  45words

  2. Write the for point of view and explain – factual information only 55 words

  3. Write the against point of view and explain – factual information only 55 words

  4. Write 2 sentences for your summary. Sentence 1 – Which do you choose, for or against? You can not be both. Ask a question for the second sentence. Copy and paste at the top of your essay

  5. Cut and paste your opinion to the conclusion (we must choose only one)

  6. Rewrite your opinion and and rewrite your question

  7. Adjust your introduction and conclusion – 45 words each

  8. Take the opinion and question you pasted at the top of your essay and make that the title (Underline your title and center it)

Essay – problems and solutions

Part A: Monday

Aim: to identify a problem and write about it, and present 2 solutions.

Method: Follow this writing format;

  • Select a topic from Humanities
  • Body Paragraph 1 – Present the problem
  • Body Paragraph 2 – Write soultion 1
  • Body Paragraph 3 – Write soultion 2
  • Body Paragraph 4 – Compare the strenghts and weaknesses of your solutions

Introduction

Follow these steps to write your introduction;

  • sentence 1: introduce the problem
  • sentence 2: introduce solution 1
  • sentence 3: introduce solution 2
  • sentence 4: give a comparison of the solutions

Conclusion

  • sentence 1: restate the problem
  • sentence 2: summerize solution 1 and solution 2
  • sentence 3: select which is the best solution and say why (your opinion)
  • sentence 4: support sentence for sentence 3; example, statistical information…

Rewording

Aim 1: To learn how to write a paragraph

Method: Use the ‘Example Paragraph’ on page 2 of the writing guide and write one information paragraph (70-85words): link

Topic: Unit 1 – Places. Select one of your favorite cities in Japan and write a short paragraph describing the city, and say why you like it, and give your opinion.

Writing objectives:

Repeaters: complete your essay tonight, and include key words (3 or 4) and list under your title

First timers: complete your essay; this is called template writing – everyone will see me: music, history, medicine, astronomy

  • select a new topic;
  • write three paragraphs – each paragraph 4 sentences (total – 12 sentences)
  • introduction paragraph; topic (introduction), define topic, give opinion, say why the topic is important
  • opinion paragraph; give your general opinion, explain your opinion, give example 1, and example 2
  • conclusion paragraph; say again why this topic is important, say again your general opinion, impact sentence (to make the reader think more about the topic), one sentance of new information(you can ask a question).
