Week 4 Essay Outline (350words)

Aim: Alternative introduction and conclusion (50 words); 2 main body paragraphs (referencing); 1 opinion / experience paragraph (Wednesdays class) (65-80 words)

Procedure: as follows

  1. Select a topic (34 subject list) – any topic related to the subject name
  2. Research the topic for 20 minutes (good English reading practice)
  3. Begin to write your 2 body paragraphs and bring to the next class (26th)
  4. Then (26th): write your number 3 body paragraph based on opinion / experiences
  5. Homework: to write your Introduction and Conclusion to finish – show me in the next class (31st)
  • Referencing Hints*

Look for website information that has same or similar information; and different. This is helpful for step 2: researching.

Also, select websites (sources of information)with different types of data; information based text; numerical (statistics / dates / periods of time); graphs (week 7); visual for example pictures, diagrams and so on…

Opinion: one sided opinion essay

Body paragraph – main point 1

Body paragraph – main point 2

Support paragraph – main point 1 or main point 2 or both main points; added information to write your argument

Question / Problem / Issue / Statement – 1 line

Argument paragraph (rebuke/rebuttle) – recognise the opposing view point and argue against it

Conclusion – reversed introduction

Nov 6 – Nov 11

Aim: Select a topic from the course – and next select an issue to talk about the advantages and disadvantages

Method: Write the following;

Step 1. Explain Two points of view; as body paragraphs:

  • 1. Advantages point of view and,

  • 2. Disadvantages point of view

Step 2. Select the point of view you agree with the most and say why; as a body paragraph

  • 3. Discussion body paragraph;

  • make a comparison; 1) direct and 2)indirect

  • Direct: you can make a comparison based on the same information in both body paragraphs.

  • Indirect: when you come to a conclusion based on some information – it is also called drawing a conclusion

Complete these three paragraphs and show me in the next class on Monday – November!!!

Aim: Select a topic with some degree (level) of conflict. It can be a major topic or a minor topic

Method: Write the following;

Step 1. Explain Two points of view; as body paragraphs:

  • 1. For point of view and,
  • 2. Against point of view

Step 2. Select the point of view you agree with the most and say why; as a body paragraph

  • 3. Discussion body paragraph

Complete these three paragraphs and show me in the next class on Monday – November!!!

Activity – opinion writing

Aim: Write a paragraph (40words) which contains your opinion based on the content of the topic. What do you agree and disagree with. You can choose.

Lesson 5/6

Aim: To listen to a topic video and explain the subject and video contents

Method: Watch the video and complete the following;

  1. Subject Name:
  2. Explain the video in 20 words or less
  3. From the video define the subject (make a definition)
  4. Identify 2 or 3 main points
  5. Make a list of 10-15 key words

Following this you will prepare a subject description essay, include;

  • Subject Title
  • Introduction; describe the essay; explain the video content; explain the
  • 2 body paragraphs;
  •      Body Paragraph 1 video report – explain the video contents
  •      Body Paragraph 2 additional subject material; research your own content and describe how this subject is used in real life
  • Conclusion; summerize your essay; in the last sentence give your opinion
  • Body Paragraph 3 select some one famous and give an autobiography about this person

Lesson 4

Aim: To write an Introduction

Method: Writing an introduction to; a) introduce the main points, and b) link the introduction to the first body paragraphs

Procedure: To write the following sentences;

  1. Topic sentence – Introduce the topic of the essay
  2. Main Point one – Write what the first body paragraph is about
  3. Main Point two – Write what the second body paragraph is about
  4. Summarize what the essay is about and link to the first paragraph

Lesson 3

Aim 1: Write an Introduction and complete essay 1

Method: Learn to write a standard format introduction

  • Connect the summary of the essay in the Conclusion; to the Introduction
  • use the technique – reword each line
  • do not use different terms

Aim 2: Select a new topic from the the academic subjects and re-peat the essay objectives

Complete by Wednesday 9th;

  • 2 body paragraphs
  • Conclusion
  • Introduction
