Final Essay

Aim: Select a topic from the Gandai course. If you select the same subject, then choose a different and new topic

Method; Using the objectives in this course, write a 450 word essay about your topic.

Procedure: Write your essay in a word document (A); complete a sentence by sentence discourse on your essay in PowerPoint (B)

Essay Format:

  1. Title
  2. One line statement
  3. Introduction
  4. Body Paragraph 1 – content based
  5. Body Paragraph 2 – content based
  6. Body Paragraph 3 – content based
  7. Body Paragraph 4 – You can choose between content, or opinion (full paragraph)
  8. Conclusion: summary or other (make your own conclusion)

Remember these points:

  • experiment with your sentence types
  • develop your writing style that you want in the future
  • there is no right or wrong
  • continue to be descriptive in your writing – add meaning to your sentences (remember my examples in class on Monday)
  • ask questions and tell me your ideas on Wednesday (10 minutes each)

Dec 8 – Advantage and dissadvatage

Aim: Is to write a body paragraph for Adv and Disadv

Method: is to use a mirror or a reflection writing format; and other methods

Topics. Finish this sentence. The adv and disadv of __________________ .

Procedure: Open a PowerPoint and do a pre-task. The pre-task is to write your own criteria before you start (such as a template).

Dec 1-8 Discourse Analysis

Introduction

Global Warming is the increase of Earth’s average surface temperature. – definition

Because of effects of greenhouse gases, like , carbon dioxide emissions from burning fossil fuels or deforestation. – explanation sentence about the cause – effects

We believe that the cause for Global warming trending now is Humans with Green house gases in results when the atmosphere traps heat radiating from Earth toward space. – specific cause (support sentence)

Certain gases in the atmosphere block heat from escaping. – explanation

Today global warming can danger us and can cause Typhoons and Tsunamis. – concern ( a reason to worry about something)

We cause Global warming by burning fossil fuel and cutting trees and deforesting. – introducing deforestation

Deforestation is a result of people cutting down trees to make things. – Example sentence

Therefore when we cut trees down we cut the process for contributing to carbon dioxide which makes fresh air for life. – example sentence

Scientist today think that humans cause global warming and due to this theory some do not believe in this theory and oppose it. – opinion verse opinion (opposing opinions)

Solution

Managing forests and agriculture methods will be introduced and later linked to how we can make an impact at a low cost to the effects of global warming: – Sub Paragraph Title (introduction – topic sentence)

Advantages

Agriculture, increased growing season in Greenland – Sub Title

Improved agriculture in some high latitude regions have been recognized. -statement / based on facts

Environmentally, an increase in green plants activity in high northern areas are well obesrved. -FOI

For example results observed inclde increased plankton (energy from) wood and plant materials in the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre Area. -example

The arctic is melting, and as a result an ice-free Northwest Passage provides a shipping shortcut for export markets between the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans – causing and effecting

An economically increased market for example in cod fishing leading to improved export and the Greenland economy has been a opportunity for residents to make an income- result leads to gain (plus)

To conclude the recent increase in forest growth, ocean surface water, oceans uptake of carbon dioxide, may provide some opportunites in Agriculture but also has led to the future for global warming to continue. -results / findings

  • select a topic – consider a problem you are aware of in Japan or in the world (world issue). *Please note – not a COVID related issue.
  • research the topic and track your research by referencing
  • write two body paragraphs *100 words each paragraph
  • each body paragraph is a new solution; Solution 1 and Solution 2
  • please use word document and track changes – I want to see all your edits from the beginning
  • do your own discourse analysis to reflect your own writing progress – instruction
  • show in Monday’s class 6th

Monday 6th: Review (PowerPoint Method) discourse analysis; LIVE preview (students body paragraphs); check everyone’s body paragraphs

Wednesday 8th: Essay Objective (B) 2×100 word – Body Paragraphs

  • Teacher demonstration: Advantage & Dissadvantage using Mirroring or reflecting method (1), and the non-reflected method (2)
  • select a topic – my topics okay / or select your own topic is also okay. Write a advantage body paragraph (1) and secondly disadvantage paragraph (2)

Aim: to prepare an old document written, and to amend the document using the current writing objective; to review the current writing objective – flexible

Method: using tracking (turn on) in your document (same as live demo)

Procedure: link your topic sentences and also;

  • link other sentences. For example link sentences in your body paragraphs;
  • continue this process in your mind while you write
  • linking helps build your arguments (main points, ideas, and opinions)

Week 4: Alternative introduction and conclusion

Aim: to understand the format for alternative styles in writing for the first and last paragraph of an essay.

Method: top & down method – you can modify the order of sentences

Objective 1: Introduction – write a draft introduction to:

  • give an opinion statement (one sentence) about the topic
  • identify the main points (information in body paragraphs)
  • identify some similar or differences for each body paragraph (main points)

Objective 2: Conclusion – write a draft conclusion to:

  • give the significance for knowing more about this topic
  • mention some interesting point or fact or opinion about the information you researched, or learned about
  • summerise what the subject is about
  • restate your final opinion

Nov 1 HW

Aim: Read your forum outline and create a short essay

Method: Follow these steps

  • Add your title
  • Add b)
  • Create 2 body paragraphs Reason 1 (paragraph 1 – 65 words); Reason 2 (paragraph 2 – 65 words)
  • As part of your body paragraphs – recognize the opposing viewpoints / and others opinions. We often use common knowledge, but that means also in more serious situations we can research the information to consider the viewpoints or the opinions

Note* If you have a strong opinion about something, use both common knowledge and research

What does recognize mean? and how do we write about it

Fast Food: opposing viewpoints

  • fast food is quick and easy to purchase and eat – credit / merit
  • fast food is usually pre-cooked or prepared, and reheated or cooked in oil bases – demerit

Although fast food is often pre-cooked or cooked in oil, it is easy to purchase and eating fast food is very convenient

Fast Food: peoples opinions

  • some people think its okay to eat fast food every now and then (not often)
  • some people think that you should never eat fast food
  • some people don’t really care

Although some people may eat fast food regularly, I think that you should take care and only eat fast food occasionally
