Aim: To create a Role play (make a small conversation) between you and a foreigner.

Procedure: read the parts and follow the steps;

Part A: preparing

  1. Make a group of 2 or 3
  2. Theme is culture *event in Japan
  3. You will need your worksheets for a reference for language; vocabulary and expressions; check the internet for information
  4. event ideas
  • Disney Land / Sea
  • USJ / German villiage
  • Car show
  • Sports event
  • Music concert
  • Museum
  • Comic / Manga fesitval
  • Zoo
  • University event with exchange students
  • Festivals – fireworks / floats *Nebuta / …
  • Japanese restaurant / cafe – for example such / family-iakaiwa / Koiwai farm snow festival

Part B: assignment planning – CROW

  1. Make a conversation using the “Role Play Method” C-R-O-W; decide the following
  2. C = content [speaking script(dialogue) / the culture information for the communication]
  3. R = relationship [2 or 3 speakers; at least one foreigner]
  4. O = objective [talking about culture; similarities and differences]
  5. W = whereabouts [where are you]

Part C: Communication techniques (not No.2) – use five techniques; the teacher will give you a review

  1. discuss and write the CROW [Task 1]
  2. use the speaking objective techniques
  3. you must use 5 out of these techniques [1-8]
  4. write your role play script [person A / person B / person C] on note paper *A4 paper

for example;

  • Japanese: Hi. Nice to meet you. Which country are you from?
  • American: Howdy. I am from Houston, America.
  • Japanese: Sorry, did you say “H-o-s-t-o-n”? T8-confirming details Could you repeat that please.
  • American: Sure “Hou-st-on”
  • Japanese: “Hou-st-on”
  • American: Yes. That is right
  • Japanese: Welcome to the Omagari fireworks festival in Akita.
  • American: This is an amazing fireworks display.
  • Japanese: I think so too. T7-Agree Did you know that it is the “National Fireworks Competition” in Japan?
  • American: Uh-huh T5-Back channeling
