Follow Up Questions

What are follow up questions?

Sometimes, it is too difficult to add more +alpha, or we want to know something that the speaker didn’t tell us.

We need to use follow-up questions to get more information.

If our question has more detail, the speaker can give us more information when they answer us.

We can be more clear by saying, “You said _______ . Question?”

Examples of follow-up questions

A: I’m from Ichinoseki. It takes me a long time to come to school, because I take the shinkansen every day. So I have to wake up early, and I get home late.

B: You said you take the shinkansen for an hour?
A: I’m from Osaka. It’s already pretty hot there! So I’m a little worried about winter in Morioka. It’s going to be my first real winter.

B: You said it’s already hot? When do you usually do hanami in Osaka?
A: I’m from Morioka. Actually, I went to Ichikou. It’s right across the road from Gandai, so I already know the university pretty well.

B: You said you went to Ichikou?! Me too! What class were you in? Who was your teacher?
