Word Order

Aim: Is to consider the order of the sentences we write:

Title: The Importance of both Diet and Exercise for your health

Introduction

  • give an opinion statement (one sentence) about the topic first sentence connects to the last sentence
  • identify the main points (information in body paragraphs)
  • identify some similar or differences for each body paragraph (main points)

Body Paragraph 1: Diet

  • This sentence links to the first sentence in the introduction
  • Example: FOI (Fact of Information). The importance of eating foods from the five food groups is recognized as healthy eating [1], for example eating fruits help keep your blood pressure low [3].

Body Paragraph 2: Exercise

  • This sentence links to the first sentence in the introduction
  • Example: FOI. Daily exercise is recommended for your health to keep your heart strength stable and as previously mentioned, exercise and fruits is good for a low blood pressure reading[2][3].

Conclusion

  • give the significance for knowing more about this topic
  • mention some interesting point or fact or opinion about the information you researched
  • summerise what the subject is about
  • restate your final opinion – last sentence connects to the first sentence

Note* [3] Fruits are a good way to get the vitamins and minerals you need for a stable diet. People who generally eat fruits regularly have a low blood pressure.

Manuscript essay explanation

Format
  1. Title & Author – separated as main author (1st name) the other authors
  2. Introduction – provides details about the purpose of the paper and reviews / introduces each section
  3. Micro teaching (section 2) and sub sections 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 2.4 – are research subjects related to this study (research)
  4. 2.5 Research Question(s) – If there are two RQ’s – 1 is the initial research for the purpose of the study (decided before the study starts); 2 is a more specific question related to results (decided after the research starts)
  5. Always – section 3 is the method of the study. It is the how you do your study, where you do the study and also the reason for doing the study. Also, how you will collect the data of the study, and how you will analysis of the study.
  6. Section 4 – is the Results. Usually the results are presented for the research question(s). Results for RQ 1, then RQ2. The results are shown in text and also visual for example Plot graphs (in this case). For results (RQ2) the actual discourse (text conversation or feedback) is shown to provide results,
  7. In addition – Visual recording of the results was provided using a software program to create a tree diagram – I had mixed result data format (graph and student discourse), so I decided to make a format in tree digram to combine the results.
  8. Section 5 – Analysis of the results – what I think the results mean, and I also try and answer the RQ’s – by Drawing Conclusion of the results based on the information in section 2, because these people I reference in section 2 are the SE (Subject Experts). Its my opinion of the results, which I discuss, and relate to the SEs.
  9. Section 6 – Conclusion: links to the introduction as a summary of all the content
  10. References – 22 articles I read to create my research. FYI this research took me 2 years, while I have a full time job!
Subject (content)

How do we know what the content is of an article or report is?

  1. Read the introduction first, then the Methodology (S3), then read Section 2 – contains the connection of different content related to each of the content (sub sections)
  2. Next look at the articles in the Reference section at the end of the Manuscript, read the Titles of the research that was used to make this research.
  3. Scanning – a method where you read the Topic Sentence of a paragraph (first sentence); final sentence in a paragraph (summary of the content; Reading the visual data in diagrams, graphs and so on
  4. Discussion (S5) and Results (S4) – will give you deeper understanding of the content
  5. If you want to know more about this article and subject content, then read some other articles, from the reference section.

7. Objective opinion writing

Aim: To write an opinion based on the information given, called objective opinion, and the below mentioned points are 1) based on important techniques, and 2) to give you feedback on your previous essays.

Feedback and techniques: keep these things in mind:

  • when you think information is important or most important, write about it – what you select is your opinion on the content you want to cover (or review, or summarise)

  • select information given in the previous body paragraphs, you can not introduce new information, but when you write your paragraphs you can use new and different words (terms / terminology)
  • when you have to write a summary of the previous information; you can focus on any main point or main points of the body paragraphs. For example you can select Main Points from each body paragraph or only 1 body paragraph.

  • consider the most relevant main points to your opinion(s), but you can not introduce your own opinion (what you think), for example, based on your ideas and experience

  • sometimes when you don’t select content (from the body paragraph information or your ideas), you are expressing your opinion – personal based opinion
  • the main aim is to draw your own conclusion from the information – to think about the content and what it means? (Master Students: FOI, results, findings that are specific, or findings that are common, or uncommon….)

4. Building an Argument

Aim: Writing format for building an argument – we give information from source 1 (website 1) next source 2, and then we compare the information.

Method: Word document

Procedure A: Research the FOI and then create your statements and explain them, in your paragraph add the FOI (75words). Complete Procedure (B).

Introduction paragraph: we state the purpose of the essay:

  • we introduce the topic
  • we introduce the website information 1 and 2 (main points)
  • we compare the information which is the same or different

Website information paragraph 1: 75 words – main points

Website information paragraph 2: 75 words – main points

Compare the information paragraph: For example: Topic “Diet and Exercise”

Objective:

3rd body paragraph (75words): This paragraph will provide details about what is the same or different in the information.

same / or different / or maybe there is only a small difference / or this is some major differences

  • Same – Both websites provided information that both diet and exercises are important.
  • Same – Information in both websites showed that to loose weight (main point) you need to change your diet and exercise regularly (main point).
  • Different – Website 1 said that you can diet and loose weight. But website two said that you need to diet and exercise to loose weight.

Conclusion Paragraph – you will write a one sentence statement, giving your opinion. For example: I think that… In my opinion…

*Kentaro: Both website one and website two say that over 20% of the population is 65 years or older. One small difference is website two gives the statistic of 28% in 2019.

Final Assignment

Aim: to convert your speaking product (2) in a written format

Objective: Your spoken dialogue is important – its the core or the foundation content of your written assignment. This means, you can reference your speech in your own assignment. See example:

Content: My impression having played and watched the game is that it is truly one of the greatest and passionate games in the world

References: Please Note* the title is given in the reference below of your speech.

Format: follow this writing format below:

  • Title: The greatest game of all – Rugby
  • Abstract: the purpose of your assignment, including your own opinion (25 words)
  • Introduction: research some history in addition if you need it to support your introduction content (50 words).
  • 3 main paragraphs – 80 words; using your video information; your own experiences and additional knowledge; including add ons (more details of the content in the video to explain or provide information.
  • Summary including impression (50 words).

By Monday 21st – write your 3 main paragraphs

Product 2

Aim: To submit an audio recording of your speech (not video). You can use LINE voice memo (easy – click on the microphone to start recording, and un-click to stop recording (See screenshot), or an application (voice record app).

Number audio files is determined by; the information before the main content (1); 1 file for each content slide (3), and final slides – audio file number 5 – For Example see below!

PowerPoint exercise

Aim: To describe a sports event or activity; through research of media sources using YouTube. I will give an example of the World Cup Rugby competitions

Objective: Often in formal situations (Conference) we are invited to make a presentation; once presenting there is often a article journal of the presentations made available – called conference proceedings. Therefore we will create a presentation; and then later convert the presentation into a short article

PowerPoint Method: Search and identify 2 media sources using YouTube. You will need;

  • to search YouTube – an account is recommended but not required. FYI you can easily set up a YouTube account or log in using Gmail or other SMS / email accounts
  • to use a PC or smartphone or device with headphones to listen to videos you search – if you have an account with YouTube it is easy to track your watch history
  • to include the URL of your 2 videos in your Reference section

Hints: To search for a general topic: What is World Cup Rugby; Or to be more specific in your search: World Cup Rugby 2019 explained

Activity Procedure (A): Follow these steps to search for informative videos of information about the event:

  1. Select a sports event anywhere in the world (of course Japan)
  2. Research YouTube to find 2 videos about the sports event. The type of video you are looking for is informative type (not entertainment or viewing types). This means a video which contains information explaining or describing the event. It is recommended that the video is between 2 minutes and 3 minutes in length (in English).
  3. Select 2 videos that help explain and describe the event – different information is helpful (same information okay too). See the two examples below.
  4. Helpful search words include; facts about … , rules about how … , explaining the … , a video describing … , official … video , documentary about … …

Activity Procedure (B): Follow these steps to record information about the event:

  1. One method is to record information you hear and write the time of the video. This is a good way to track the information, and find the information easily, again, and again.
  2. Take notes on paper (one paper for each video); I recommend to make three columns, column 1 for time and column 2 category of information (group name) and column 3 for key-details. Teacher will give you a handout.
  3. Record FOI; such as dates; and other numerical data (number facts: for example number of players / supporters, or number of teams)
  4. Keep your notes short, and write the key words. See the advanced outline about research and note taking: click
  5. It is also recommended to record all the facts you hear, but later you might not need all the facts in your report

Activity Procedure (C): Follow these steps to store and save information (text only – you do not need pictures) about the videos, using PowerPoint, including the following slides:

  1. Title of Video 1 slide
  2. Short description of the event slide – introduction
  3. FOI slides – as many slides as you need (max 7)
  4. Reference slide – copy and past the video URL
  5. Title of Video 2 slide
  6. Short description of the event slide – introduction
  7. FOI slides – as many slides as you need (max 7)

26 Nov – State Issues

Aim: To support your ideas in giving issues using two methods; Method 1 Graph or Method 2 is Media Video Source

Method 2: Audio media source using YouTube (in English or Japanese)

Activity Procedure (A): Follow these steps to search for videos and information about the issue:

  1. The type of video you are looking for is informative type. This means a video which contains information explaining or describing the issue. It is recommended that the video is between 2 minutes and 3 minutes in length (in English is preferred, Japanese is okay).
  2. Different information is helpful to build the current issue information or (same information is okay to add to current information). It is important that the information connects in the adding process or the building process.

Activity Procedure (B): Follow these steps to record information about the event:

  6. Finally make a Table in word document and give present your information

Final Procedure (C): include the information into your original essay as;

  1. add new and additional information, or
  2. build with new information about the issue

Include as part of your issue paragraphs in blue text. Therefore the original essay is black, the new video information is blue.
