1. Block writing

Block Writing

Aim: A simple form of writing, that we define as writing in blocks of information.

Method: These texts do not have to link and can be based on different sources of information. Keep a record of where you get your information from. Copy and past the URLs below your essay.

Advantages: Block writing is thinking about the topic for the first time. There are some benefits and I will explain them to you now:

  • By writing you can understand how much or how little you know about the topic
  • You can understand if you know the vocab, or if you need to research the words you need.
  • As you write, you can develop your ideas – writing is a good way to develop your ideas
  • This format of writing is a pre-writing activity – you can use this information, or you can change this information (delete)
  • You can think about how long the writing exercise will take you? So, you can organise your work schedule.

Writing Objectives: Based on your initial topic based on the theme ‘Global’ write the following;

  • title
  • introduction – 1 sentence
  • define topic- research the internet (30words)
  • research and explain in more detail the topic (50words)
  • in your explanation; please think about your main points (highlight). You need 2 main points.
  • next, research the main points on the internet, and take notes
  • write two (2) sub-paragraphs for your main points
  • for example: Main Point 1: name / explain more information / write another 35 words; Main Point 2: name / explain more information / write another 35 words;
  • type your sub paragraphs on computer for the next class

There are several ways to explain to give more information:

  1. say your ambitions in the future; study or work
  2. specific study goals at this university
  3. explain the reasons why you are studying this course

Conclusion (30words):

Objective A: After you have written your text of information (blocks), now it is time to summarise your information. The best way is to re-word some information that you have already written. Select the main ideas or points. Do not write anything new.

Introduction (30-45 words):

Expand introduction: From the information you have please re-write the introduction sentence. there are two important points;

  1. Introduce the importance of the topic; explain your two main points
  2. Explain the content of the essay; write a preview of the information in sub-paragraph 1 and sub-paragraph 2

Teacher example:

PowerPoint exercise

Aim: To describe a sports event or activity; through research of media sources using YouTube. I will give an example of the World Cup Rugby competitions

Objective: Often in formal situations (Conference) we are invited to make a presentation; once presenting there is often a article journal of the presentations made available – called conference proceedings. Therefore we will create a presentation; and then later convert the presentation into a short article

PowerPoint Method: Search and identify 2 media sources using YouTube. You will need;

  • to search YouTube – an account is recommended but not required. FYI you can easily set up a YouTube account or log in using Gmail or other SMS / email accounts
  • to use a PC or smartphone or device with headphones to listen to videos you search – if you have an account with YouTube it is easy to track your watch history
  • to include the URL of your 2 videos in your Reference section

Hints: To search for a general topic: What is World Cup Rugby; Or to be more specific in your search: World Cup Rugby 2019 explained

Activity Procedure (A): Follow these steps to search for informative videos of information about the event:

  1. Select a sports event anywhere in the world (of course Japan)
  2. Research YouTube to find 2 videos about the sports event. The type of video you are looking for is informative type (not entertainment or viewing types). This means a video which contains information explaining or describing the event. It is recommended that the video is between 2 minutes and 3 minutes in length (in English).
  3. Select 2 videos that help explain and describe the event – different information is helpful (same information okay too). See the two examples below.
  4. Helpful search words include; facts about … , rules about how … , explaining the … , a video describing … , official … video , documentary about … …

General Example Video 1 Title: The 2019 Rugby World Cup explained

More Specific Example Video 2 Title: World Rugby outlines Nations Championship concept

Activity Procedure (B): Follow these steps to record information about the event:

  1. One method is to record information you hear and write the time of the video. This is a good way to track the information, and find the information easily, again, and again.
  2. Take notes on paper (one paper for each video); I recommend to make three columns, column 1 for time and column 2 category of information (group name) and column 3 for key-details. Teacher will give you a handout.
  3. Record FOI; such as dates; and other numerical data (number facts: for example number of players / supporters, or number of teams)
  4. Keep your notes short, and write the key words. See the advanced outline about research and note taking: click
  5. It is also recommended to record all the facts you hear, but later you might not need all the facts in your report

Activity Procedure (C): Follow these steps to store and save information (text only – you do not need pictures) about the videos, using PowerPoint, including the following slides:

  1. Title of Video 1 slide
  2. Short description of the event slide – introduction
  3. FOI slides – as many slides as you need (max 7)
  4. Reference slide – copy and past the video URL
  5. Title of Video 2 slide
