Advanced Outline for Research Information

Aim: To use various methods to obtain information using a media source, in this case video searching YouTube

Objective: To record key words, phrases, main points and quotations:

  1. Key words: are topic words or vocabulary used in a particular topic. Identify words of similar meaning that help describe the content
  2. Phrases: are words that are used to explain the content and are often unique – content based. Phrases often have different meanings in different topics
  3. Main Points: identify the key points and identify examples; reasons; data explained in diagrams (for example) and other facts – such as history (past) or predictions (for the future
  4. Quotations: sentences that you may use and cite as direct quotations in your school work, such as essays and reports, using referencing.

APA Format

Aim: To learn and be aware of writing thesis format, and to practice APA format writing citation.

Method: To read and understand the writing format rules and writing regulations for official documentation.

Aim: to use research content effectively, and write a short essay based on a new topic; research using 1 to 3 websites (select a website with a graph).

Writing objectives: to determine your essay objective, and to write clear and distinct paragraphs

Method: to complete the following paragraph format, using the following procedure;

  1. essay title – as a question statement
  2. objective essay statement – write one sentence to explain the essay objective And write the importance of knowing or understanding about this topic / subject Or commonly called relevance
  3. 3 short body paragraphs with headings – 1 paragraph using each of the “purpose” goals.
  4. Under the statement write the heading “Key Words: keyword 1, keyword 2, keyword 3, keyword 4
  5. Include at least 1 image or graph in your document – the teacher will conduct an activity and give you a demonstration, based on the below graph. Select a graph from your websites, or select a new graph (reference the graph URL) and write 50 words (body paragraph). Your graph information should be used to link to your objective statement; help you to answer your title question.
  6. Final Statement – a 1 sentence or 2 sentence to summarize your objective and answer your question Ask a question

What to consider about giving graph information

  • The heading you will use in your text – shorten title for example
  • What specific information will your use to introduce your graph
  • What part of the graph will you explain to support your main ideas
  • What way will you explain the information; low / high; or range; and or making conparisons
  • Another way is to draw information from a graph and provide grave ideas in your context – I will give examples.

What is one of our most important things to remember about writing an essay? We need a purpose goal. For example:

  1. to convince your readers about something – linking facts of research to your ideas
  2. increase / build awareness about an issue. problem. or situation – often for the first time
  3. to build upon people previous knowledge and expand on new knowledge

Aim: To learn how to do research. Recording information and selecting specific reference text and images

Method: For the purpose of research in academic and formal writing.

Research ideas and concepts: Researching for important information can include a varied and different range of ideas. For example:

  • problems and solutions
  • descriptions and facts of information (FOI)
  • explanations of systems and processes to explain and how things work
  • opinions and points of views of various people involved
  • development, progress, and current changes

The topic (or the subject) and the reason why you are doing the research will determine the information you want to research. The choice is yours!

Select a topic based on current issues and reforms

  1. Recycle carried out in Japan
  2. Waste of food in Japan’s convenience stores, supermarkets or restaurants
  3. Effects of domestic travel in Japan due to the Corona virus

Research steps: follow these steps

  1. Find three websites in English with various information about your topic. They can hold similar information or various information
  2. Start recording research data, which includes main points, key words, and images. In the example below it is often a good idea to begin formatting your researched information – the same way you are going to use it. Therefore, for essay writing, record main points to focus your ideas on, include potentioal headings or sub headings you may need. In addition, some paraphrased text of information, or direct quotations, can be helpful later.

  • Introduce the next essay; follow these steps;
  1. into the ICT course:
  2. select a topic from Social Sciences
  3. read the writing guide – Paragraph Structure (see course links)
  4. research and prepare your essay

Essay Objective: Write a detailed overview of the topic and research current information

  1. Introduction paragraph (30words): Define the subject/topic
  2. Body Paragraph 1 (80words): Historic information – give an account of the history
  3. Body Paragraph 2 (80words): Provide an example(s) of current issues or events surrounding the subject/topic
  4. Conclusion- re write the introduction (reword)

Other conditions:

Use separate references for each body paragraph; body paragraph 2 – give at least two examples

Course aims and objectives:

Method: Paragraph writing and format

  • Each paragraph will be outlined with a purpose and word count (limit)
  • Specific writing objectives will be given for each paragraph with the main focus on;
  1. each paragraph has a topic sentence (first sentence) explaining the essay / paragraph
  2. support sentences will be used to write a particular paragraph, which are;

Support Sentences: are sentences that support your argument (ideas) in your writing, which are;

  • give examples
  • facts of information (FOI) – research the internet
  • opinions – both supporting viewpoints and opposing view points
  • beliefs – which are experienced, taught or learned
  • theories – laws or concepts that are related to physical science topics and other proven methodology

Paragraph structure: There are two ways to order your argument in paragraph writing:

  • strongest idea to weakest idea – top down method
  • or reversed – weakest building towards strongest idea

Essay structure: It is also important to link your ideas between paragraphs to strengthen your argument (ideas). Ways of doing this include;

  • introducing the next body paragraph in the concluding sentence of the previous paragraph
  • rephrasing main ideas in short points to link ideas between paragraphs
  • referencing to support ideas in paragraphs

Aim: Select a new topic, and write your experiences

Method: follow these methods;

Paragraph 1:

  • consider what subjects we have experiences in
  • write some main points about your experiences 3-5 points; write a body paragraph talking about your experiences – 80 words

Paragraph 2: In this expansion objective provide the following:

  • select1 or 2 main experiences (paragraph 1) that you would like to write more about:
  • giving more details – expanding the details with background information
  • give your opinion – explaining how this experience has also effected you in the past and as well as now and in the future

Homework: Complete the draft essay and bring to the next class

  • introduction – 30 words introducing your topic
  • x2 body paragraphs – 80 words
  • summary – 30 words final statement on the significance of your ideas (body paragraphs)
