June 23 – 30

Aim: Compile an essay

Compile: “to produce a book, list, report, etc. by bringing together different items, articles, songs, etc.; to collect information in order to produce a book, list, etc.”(Oxford online dictionary, 2021).

  1. To produce: is to make something as you go… you don’t know what the final result will be
  2. Bringing together different items: this means that you have a) Similar data or content, b) Different data or content, and c) Same data but there are some differences.

Objective: Make your own essay. You have data and content so please decide what format you are going to write your main body essay paragraphs. For example:

  • Focus on Similar (a) and Similar with some differences (c)
  • Focus on b) differences and c) similar with some differences
  • Focus on a) and b) and c)

Then you have to select how many body paragraphs you need? For example;

  • 2 main body paragraphs
  • 3 main body paragraphs
  • 4 main body paragraphs

Content and Format: Your content helps you to decide your format, next your writing helps decide the content you want to use (focus in information), and then the format helps you to select the information you want to use, or not use.

This is a cycle. You write, check your format, change or keep your format, and continue writing. This is the cycle you constantly go through in writing.

Monday: bring your body paragraphs to class, I will check. Also I will tell you how to write:

  • Title: Highlight 2 or 3 sentences (yellow) that are important (or significant) in your body paragraphs; The first sentence of a paragraph is called the topic sentence; Also the final sentence is concluding (the main point) / connecting sentence (to the next paragraph); Make your title based on these sentences, and decide if you are going to ask a question or write a descriptive sentence. Write both. Reword your highlighted sentences.
  • Key words (highlight blue): these words are specific words/terms that are used in your topic; do a search for the words you think are key – how many times are they written; as well what words are used in every body paragraph; evaluate your body paragraphs and re-write words into your paragraphs. Write 2 to 4 keywords under your title.
  • Introduction
  1. Topic explanation – explain the topic/subject
  2. Give your motivation for writing about this topic/subject
  3. Paraphrase each body paragraph (1 sentence); by introducing each body paragraph
  4. Give your own opinion (short summary – 1 line) Word about my opinion and content in the body paragraph (I highlight light green)

AND your own opinion paragraph:)

  • In this paragraph I will base my opinion as a ‘ a second year university nutrition student’ who ‘believes that obesity in young children in Japan is increasing’. Make a connection between who you are (position) and your ideas/beliefs.
  • Base your opinion on the content (any body paragraphs)
  • Give the reader something to think about – ask a question (is based on the reader to think about their own opinion) to the reader; For example: Have you noticed overweight children more recently, than you did before?
  • Now you have to answer your own question. This is usually your final sentence!

Conclusion:

  • Summarize your paper
  • Include some content from every body paragraph
  • Revise your opinion based on your position / ideas or beliefs
