Pre-Task: Essay objectives

Aim: To prepare an essay on any topic in Japan OR course subject at Iwate University

Objective: To write an “academic proposal” about a topic or subject

Procedure A: Write the following proposal sentences;

  1. Write a Title
  2. Introduce your topic / subject
  3. Give a definition
  4. Explain 1st main point about your topic / subject
  5. Explain 2nd main point about your topic / subject
  6. Write a sentence explaining why you selected this topic.
  7. Write a sentence to give your opinion

Procedure B: Research 3 websites on the internet for essay information, copy and paste the URL links under the title “Research”

Submit: email to iwatesensei@gmail.com in a word document by Wednesday 22nd 6pm

Final Essay Objectives

Aim: To write your own essay; select the content; decide the paragraphs – and the paragraph style/format you think is the most suitable

Specific Objectives:

  • you need a Title
  • each paragraph needs a heading
  • each body-paragraph word count is between 65 – 80 words (the total word count is 400 words – (380words to 420words))
  • introduction paragraph 65 words
  • summary paragraph 65 words

Review objectives:

  • submit a draft essay
  • review given by teacher
  • objectives to complete given

9. Writing exercises using APA

Aim: To conduct writing exercises, and practice APA methods for paragraph citations (use previous essays) and referencing:

  1. Referencing
  2. To read and understand the writing format rules and writing regulations for official documentation.
  3. Exercises: cite and references: practice in class using previous essays

Select a previous essay and re-write your essay, make improvements to your:

  • paragraph structure
  • sentence style and sentence ordering
  • select another website to improve your research content
  • improve the vocabulary – terminology
  • write a new and improved int (title) and introduction / summary (paragraphs)

Essay: Topic 10

Aim: Research a topic based on any topic related to your study, OR, research a global issues such as 1) climate change; 2) food shortage; 3) energy crisis; 4) health risks; and 5) economic concerns

Method: For writing, please complete these research objectives

  • Website 1: Main information – select a website that has a lot of main points (3 to 5). Select two main points:

when you think information is important or most important, write about it 

consider (to think about) the most relevant main points to your opinion(s),

  • Website 2: research Main Point number 1 more
  • Website 3: research Main Point number 2 more

Writing Format: Write 65 word paragraphs for each body paragraph

8. Introducing & Evaluative conclusions

Aim: To write an 1.Introduction & 2.Conclusion (evaluation). Bring your task to the next class, Monday 13th.

1.Introduction: Or “Pre-Introduction” also called an Abstract: Write a paragraph to introduce your University and course to exchange students from America

Objective: To explain your university; course; and subjects (75 words)

2.Conclusion: Write an evaluation describing things you like and don’t like about your course and study

Objective: To explain the positive points and negative points – in your opinion (75 words)

Steps

  1. You need to write a question about your topic. First research 2 websites for information. Read the information and think about a topic-question
  2. Next, give two short statements to answer your question; statement 1 is website 1 & statement 2 is website 2
  3. Then Give your short statement: Explain what the statement means in one full sentence
  4. Continue to write you paragraph. Provide information-details to build your information (argument)
  5. Each paragraph total word count: short response:statement:details (75-100words)

Then show me in the next class. In the next class on Wednesday we are going to crossover details between website 1 and website 2 for the next writing objective. The main objective is to compare details of information to help build your argument.

Rewriting essay task

Aim: Is to do a re-write of any previous essay we did in class. However you can not select your first essay.

Two objectives: 1) Format and 2) Content

Format: Follow these objectives

  • after you select an essay, identify the format – writing style or outline: Title type; introduction type (paragraph or statement); the purpose of the body paragraphs; summary / conclusion; and finally the References.
  • then go through the content

Content: Follow these objectives

  • read the essay information
  • decide if this is the essay you want to re-write? (finally)
  • check your References; did you use the content well in your essay, or not; and also what other references (content) do you need to search for? Please search
  • how can you improve and add to the essay information

Format:

  • you can increase the word count to 450 words
  • and next you decide your format and then continue to search and record information from your references
  • continue this cycle: format to content back to format…

You are now at the draft stage: some limits include

  • write content for every section of your format
  • 375 words
  • teacher feedback based on format and content – Monday 14th at G32.
