W4 – Culture through animation

Aim: To explain a cultural aspects about Japan, using Japanese Animation and movie categories

Cultural Aspects: a lot of things can be learned, for example:

  • clothes
  • food
  • history / famous stories
  • places and scenery of Japan
  • people and relationships
  • beliefs (what people believe) and ideas
  • language
  • different people characters
  • seasons of Japan
  • other interesting things…

Method: Select a Animation movie and search for a specific “Movie Trailer”; its a preview of the movie

Procedure: Search for your own Animation Trailer on YouTube

Steps: May 11th Slide 1 to 6 please finish

  1. Slide 1: Paste URL into a new PowerPoint. Title is “Culture and Cartoons”
  2. Slide 2: Watch the video! Then write what the Story Plot is (30 words).
  3. Slide 3: Describe the location of the movie – where is the movie setting? include a picture
  4. Slide 4 – 5: Describe two main characters – who are the main people or animals in the movie? Name; appearance (look); personality / character.
  5. Slide 6a: In your own words: what does this movie teach about Japanese – culture, people, stories, food, customs, clothes / costumes… (50 words)
  6. Bonus Slide 6b: Make a list of your top three animation movies
  7. Slide 7: Recommendation (30 words)

Language objectives: To focus on introducing your content to foreigners.

Slide 2: explain the main point of the story

Slide 3: is the location real or fantasy, what things about the location can you describe

Slide 4 – 5: explain personalities, relationships, and interesting things about the characters in the story

Slide 6a: link to the cultural ideas (above) based on

  • based on our own experiences
  • by opinion: everyone knows about this animation
  • your impression: about how well the animation connects to Japan culture
  • to achieve the goal of the exercise

Bonus Slide 6b: list or compare your 3 favorite animations;

  • explain why you like these animations
  • explain what is similar or different about them

Slide 7: Giving a recommendation. There are several ways to give your recommendation. Recommend a foreigner to:

  • the story plot; or
  • location of the movie; or
  • the characters; or
  • what you can learn about Japanese people

Working Criteria: check your content and the goal of the exercise by;

  • read aloud your content and self-evaluate;
  • check the content is easy to understand;
  • if you are not sure then try using different words
  • go back to the slide objectives, ask your group members to read your slides – get feedback
