Last Class Checklist: Please follow the steps in order (1 to 4) to complete your last class:

  1. submit your three culture videos link
  2. submit your final project by August 4th, 5pm. link
  3. do the workshop survey in Gandai online(only after you submit 1 and submit 2) link

Classwork and Submit

  • Class participation (LINE) Stage 1 and Stage 2: participation grade of 40%
  • Bonus Activity 3% Available 20th to 25th: written report – all students can do this assignment. Video Impression activity
  • Stage 3 Workshop Activities: Culture videos 30%. Re-submit your video (three videos) again in Gandai Assessment Online available 20th (next class): 10% participation and 20% video speaking here

W8 – 9 – 10 Cultural Topics

Aim: Culture theme activity, please select one topic below:

  8. Education life in Japan for students (select JHS / HS / or University
  9. Festivals in Japan
  10. Importance of University students working a part-time job

Topic Section Process: Select 2 topics, and do these tasks

Research steps:

  • start checking the internet for information (3 websites)
  • compare information on the internet– which topic has good ideas for you?
  • think about the topic that you can develop your ideas
  • open a new PowerPoint – file name: topictitle_master
Stage 1: VIDEO OBJECTIVE – Powerpoint slides

Your final objective is to make a video in zoom about 1 topic. Select your topic carefully. Follow these steps (in order):

  • create a slide to say why you selected this topic
  • provide 2 slides with information – select your information (your choice)
  • make an information slide and focus on i)experiences, ii)your opinions, and iii)give examples
  • make a slide to give foreigners specific details about your topic

Creativity: this is a new criteria to the Rubric. This is the ability you have to create something. You are required to do the following:

  • select the slide theme you want
  • select any slide format, including pictures and other images
  • text form: headings, sentences, bullet points
  • ability to use the smartphone / computers and applications
  • final impression

Homework: finish sage 1

Stage 2: VIDEO OBJECTIVE – Powerpoint slide Opinion

Aim: Please make two new slides – each slide two sentences. Please include pictures.

  • Opinion 1: What is the biggest cultural aspect (something about Japan Culture) we can learn from your topic: Sentence starter: “I think that one of the main cultural aspects we can learn is ___________________________ “. “____________________________”.
  • Opinion 2: What is the another cultural aspect (something about Japan Culture) we can learn from this topic: Sentence starter: “In addition we can also learn ______________________”. “____________________________”.

Submission: Please bring your final PowerPoint to class next week June 29th. Also, please record Opinion 1, and record Opinion 2 in LINE

LINE method: Follow these steps;

  1. When you finish your Opinion slides 1 and 2 please practice reading them
  2. LINE direct “Simon Townsend” 2 audio files
  3. File 1: Opinion 1
  4. File 2: Opinion 2
  5. Record using the LINE microphone. Click on the LINE microphone, press the start button to record (green). UN-press the button to finish recording.
  6. Listen to your audio – check your audio. You can delete your audio and try again.
  7. Your deadline is Monday 27th, 8pm.
Stage 3: ZOOM recoding and PDF upload

Aim: Record your PowerPoint presentation – all of your slides

Procedure: record in zoom; download your video file (MP4) and upload to Gandai Portal (course). Follow these steps:

  • start a zoom session (by yourself)
  • open your PowerPoint on your computer screen
  • share screen in zoom
  • click record and read your presentation
  • when you finish – end your zoom meeting to download your video
  • your video will be downloaded in the zoom folder (on your computer)
  • click on the MP4 to watch
  • you can repeat recording for practice
  • finally, upload your best MP4 to Gandai Course (portal)
  • also remember to upload your PowerPoint (save as a PDF)

June 30 – Culture Project 2

Method: Today is a project day. Your aim is to make a PowerPoint presentation

Step 1: How to make your PowerPoint?

  1. Please open a new PowerPoint
  2. Name your PowerPoint L10MangaCulture2
  3. Title Slide: Japanese Manga and image
  4. Write a short introduction explaining Japanese Comics – to foreigners (30 words)
  5. Select your first Japanese comic and describe it, include an image (20-30 words)
  6. Select your second Japanese comic and describe, include an image (20-30 words)
  7. Give your experiences – have you read comics? which comics? Include an image (20-30 words)
  8. Explain what are the advantages of reading Mango to help teach foreigners about Japanese culture? (30 words) Which Manga do you recommend?

Step 2: Make your script

  • Read your Title – 5 seconds
  • Introduction – 10 seconds
  • Comic 1 – 10 seconds
  • Comic 2 – 10 seconds
  • Experiences – 10 seconds
  • Recommend – 15 seconds

Step 3: Record your speech before next class

  • in a private place,
  • hold your smartphone one arms length away from your body,
  • position yourself in front of the computer screen,
  • and read your script,
  • next upload to YouTube and save the URL,
  • and send to your new LINE group,
  • give your rubric
