Teacher example: Reason 1
The first reason is there are a lot of festivals each year in Japan. Festivals are very popular in Spring, Summer, Autumn, and winter. For example, one of my favorite festivals is the Koiwai Winter Festival in Iwate because they have ice sculptures. That’s why I think its interesting. (49 words)
Visual Representations: there are many types of visuals used in academic writing, for example 1) pictures; 2) diagrams; 3) graphs.
Pictures: are very helpful to support the text you write. You should write the text first “Reason1” and then search for a picture to support your content.
- supporting the main idea of your paragraph – interesting points
- also, we want to use a picture to further explain our main idea
- to expand our ideas and increase the overall meaning of the text.
Koiwai Festival Picture; ice sculptures

In this picture you can see ice sculptures which have been made out of snow, from the farm at Koiwai. These sculptures have been hand made and each year they usually have a different theme. I like the tall tower sculpture the most in this picture, and I think it would take a lot of hard work and effort to make this. This is one example of ice sculptures.
Block of text: Reason 1 paragraph; picture; picture description
Hints: check the internet for details, focus on objects in the picture, include your own impression about the picture details.
